Pear-Strawberry-Orange Breakfast Smoothie

pear smoothiesNever hear to much about pears do you. I love pears, they are quite sweet, delicious and very juicy :) Did you know that pears only have about 100 calories each and have no sodium, fat or cholesterol? That makes it just about perfect dosen’t it? Pears are also a great source for fiber and vitamins A, C and K! So why don’t we hear more about them for smoothies? Well here is a great one for you mixed with strawberries and oranges for a great breakfast smoothie as well as an afternoon pick up.

  • 1/2 cup frozen strawberries
  • ½ cup vanilla Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon Flaxseed (for that boost of Omega 3s)
  • 1 orange, peeled of course
  • 1 unpeeled pear, cored and cut into pieces
  • 1 unpeeled apple, cored and cut into pieces
  • 1/4 ice
Place all the goodness into your blender and blend until smooth. If you dont have a vitamix blender cut your apples and pears into smaller pieces and add them to the blender a bit at a time.

Filling Green Smoothie

celery green smoothieThis green smoothie is little more green than fruit this time around but is still good and because of all the fiber it is quite filling as well. Be a great additional a couple times a week if you are looking to loose weight and well help you get more than your daily dose of veggis down the pipe!

  • 1 apple, cored and sliced
  • 1 pear, cored and sliced
  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 cup Ice
  • 1 head Romaine Lettuce, chopped
  • 3-4 stalks celery
  • 3/4 cup of a baby spinach
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon (not from that plastic lemon in the fridge, use a real one!)

Start off with your water, Ice, lettuce and Spinach and blend at a lower speed. Then add your fruits and celery and the highest speed and blend till smooth. This green smoothie for breakfast will keep you from reaching for those sugary snacks the rest of the morning.

Simple Apple Banana Smoothie

apple smoothiesWith the last post on the flavors of apples I decided to follow up with a nice apple smoothie recipe. Use what ever apples you wish but I kinda recommend the smoother sweeter fuji apples for this smoothie.

  • One whole ripe banana
  • Two apples cored
  • Cup of greek yogurt, non fat of course and plain.
  • 2 cups of Soy milk or Rice milk if you prefer
  • 1 cup of ice

Put all the stuff in your blender and blend for about a minute or so. If you dont have a vita mix you might want to quarter the apples, and half the bananas to make it a bit easier on your blender. Makes about 3-4 servings.

Not All Apples Are Created Equal

apple flavorsEver buy apples on sale to save money, even though they went quite the same color as the ones you normally buy and then they end up tasting different? Did you just think there were two kinds of apples, red and green? Well there are actually many many varieties of apples, each with their own unique flavor. Apple flavors have a wide range of sweetness to tartness and if you are making a particular smoothie you may want to pay attention to your apple types! If you are looking for a sweet smooth taste to your smoothie you may want to get a couple Fiji apples which are the sweetest you can find. On the other end of the scale Granny Smith apples are quite tart and will give your smoothie a little bite. Something right in the middle? The try either Red or Golden Delicious apples. To see the full spectrum of apple flavors click on the chart here.

Beyond their flavors all apples provide important health benefits. There is a reason they say ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’. From improved regulation of blood sugars to the decrease of Cholesterol, particularly the LDL, apples eaten regularly can improve your overall health. New research has also shown other benefits such as reducing the chance of Asthma and protection from lung and prostate cancer. What better way to consume than popping one or two into your blender for a healthy smoothie!

Cranberry Apple Smoothie

cranberry smoothieIts the holiday season and time to bust out the cranberries. What better way to have them besides with Christmas dinner but putting them in a delicious, healthy breakfast smoothie! Those little cranberries are a great source of vitamin C and fiber, as well as having lots of other goodies as well. Such as vitamin K, magnesium, iron and potassium. They have lots of benefits to your body and you should try working them in to your diet when you can! We are going to add a little greenery to our smoothie as well for another healthy boast!

  • 1/2 soy or rice milk (or filtered water)
  • 1 cup frozen cranberries
  • 1 whole apple cored (Golden Delicious the best)
  • 1 small banana
  • 2 cups baby spinach

Put it all in and blend baby blend (in your blender of course). Mentioned that you can use water or if you prefer you can use cranberry juice itself just make sure its a good natural/organic quality with no additives (pure juice). I like to add a banana to most my smoothies as it helps to smooth it out as well.

GoodBelly Probiotic Smoothie

Goodbelly Probiotic JuicesThis morning I tried something a new to mix things up. Goodbelly is the maker of several lines of Probiotic products. Probiotics are the good bacteria that are used in your intestines to help in digestion. It has been suggested that adding good bacteria can help in a healthy lifestyle and improve your health. While use of antibiotics and poor diet can diminish these good bugs, adding the good ones now and then can help balance things out again.

Goodbelly offers these little bugs in several forms, shots, powder or a nice juice beverage. I usually take the shots several times a week but this time I picked up a container of one of their juices. These are made with all natural organic juices while also being dairy and soy free. So I thought what a great way to get my probiotics and make a healthy smoothie as well.

  • 1 Cup or Watermelon and Cranberry Goodbelly Juice (you can use one of the others if you wish, its ok)
  • 1 Cup Frozen Strawberries
  • 1 Cup Frozen Peaches
  • 1 Banana
  • 1 Apple (cored of corse)

Makes about 4 cups

Now the Goodbelly juice is not the cheapest (quart cost me about $3.50  i think at sprouts) so may not be a regular thing for you, but should be a good addition if you can do it a couple times a week. Their site does offer coupons every so often and some to get started so check them out.

Carrot Berry Smoothie

Carrot Smoothie

Last post we were inspired by Popeye, this time we will be inspired by bugs bunny and add some carrots to our delicious breakfast smoothies! Carrots are great for improving vision, nourishing your skin and anti aging antioxidants!

2 medium carrot
1 cup frozen Cranberries
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 whole apple (cored and sliced)
1 cup baby spinach
1 Tablespoon ground flax seed (optional)
1-1 1/2 cups water

If you have a weaker blender you may want to slice up the carrots and grind them up first. You can even substitute fresh carrot juice if you wish (just decrease the water by same amount) Even with a Vitamix its a good idea to grind them up a bit first before adding the rest. This does have a slight carrot taste but you really don’t notice it with the berries. If you do just add some more berries or peaches. Oh and have to remind you again to check for stickers on your apples (I forgot again).

Let me know your thoughts, and if you liked it please share!
