Relaxin Night Cap Cherry Smoothie

Cherry-Banana Smoothie RecipeMay want to be careful if you are having this one for breakfast (just kidding) but this one does make a great night cap before bed to help you sleep. For starters cherries have high levels of melatonin, specifically the Montmorency variety. Melatonin is produced in our bodies when its dark, and one of its functions is to help  regulate the sleep-wake cycle by chemically causing drowsiness and lowering the body temperature. Next the soy milk contains high levels of tryptophan which has a sleep inducing effect as well. Finally my favorite the banana, being high in magnesium which has a calming effect on the body.

  • 3/4 Cup Soy Milk
  • 1 Banana
  • 1-1/2 Cup of Frozen Cherries
  • 1/2 Cup of Ice

Simple! I use vanilla soy milk for smother flavor and if you want extra relaxing effect cut the frozen cherries and use 1 cup concentrated tart cherry juice. Tart cherry juice can have up to 10 times the melatonin levels. If you use the juice also increase the ice!

Antioxidant Berry Blast

Healthy Breakfast Smoothies - Antioxidant Blend

Well I was making a Costco run the other day cause I was all out of frozen strawberries for my healthy breakfast smoothies and much to my dismay so was Costco! Was totally bummed but then this bag of mixed berries caught my eye, ‘Organic Antioxidant Blend. Its full of antioxidant rich berries such as strawberries, blueberries, cherries, raspberries (without the annoying seeds) and pomegranate. So I picked it up to give it a try and it has become one of my favorite smoothie mixes.

  • 1 1/2 Cups of Antioxidant Blend
  • 1 Banana
  • 1 Cup of Goodbelly Blueberry Acai
  • any other little additives (I put in a packet of Amazing Grass )

Thats it! Tastes awesome and very healthy. Want another great taste switch the Goodbelly Blueberry with the Goodbelly Mango. Mmmmmm love that one

Summer Strawberry Lemonade Smoothie

strawberry lemonade smoothieSchool is getting out here in So. California and summer vacation is about to start. Although our summer so far has been a mild one, and I hope that continues, but when it warms up this is a nice smoothie to cool you off and stay healthy as well.

Well the last one is optional but it adds lots of nutrients from veggi’s and leafy greens, as well as adding to the flavor :)

Leafy Green Smoothie for Reduced Anxiety

Omega-3sThose that know me know I have bouts of general anxiety disorder (sometimes not so general) So i my reading on finding ways to reduce or eliminate my anxiety I have found that Omega 3s are quite helpful. In studies those that have increased their Omega 3s had shown a reduction in anxiety and depression. Most people get their Omega 3s from fish and fish oil tablets. A better way is in a smoothie!

No not blending your fish, but rather with dark leafy greens!  Leafy greens are a great source of Omega 3s, not as much as that fish but still a good source. Spinach and Kale along with Broccoli tops the list of good sources. Flaxseed is also rich in Omega 3s so that is why I try adding it to every smoothie I can!

Here is a great green smoothie to help with your anxiety and depression.

  • 2 cups fresh baby spinach
  • 4 stalks fresh kale
  • 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1/2 large orange
  • 1/2 cup rice milk
  • 2  bananas
  • 2 tablespoon ground flax seed

Blend in the veggies with the milk first, then add each of the fruits and finally the flaxseed. Blend until creamy and smooth! Serves about 3.

Filling Green Smoothie

celery green smoothieThis green smoothie is little more green than fruit this time around but is still good and because of all the fiber it is quite filling as well. Be a great additional a couple times a week if you are looking to loose weight and well help you get more than your daily dose of veggis down the pipe!

  • 1 apple, cored and sliced
  • 1 pear, cored and sliced
  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 cup Ice
  • 1 head Romaine Lettuce, chopped
  • 3-4 stalks celery
  • 3/4 cup of a baby spinach
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon (not from that plastic lemon in the fridge, use a real one!)

Start off with your water, Ice, lettuce and Spinach and blend at a lower speed. Then add your fruits and celery and the highest speed and blend till smooth. This green smoothie for breakfast will keep you from reaching for those sugary snacks the rest of the morning.

Simple Apple Banana Smoothie

apple smoothiesWith the last post on the flavors of apples I decided to follow up with a nice apple smoothie recipe. Use what ever apples you wish but I kinda recommend the smoother sweeter fuji apples for this smoothie.

  • One whole ripe banana
  • Two apples cored
  • Cup of greek yogurt, non fat of course and plain.
  • 2 cups of Soy milk or Rice milk if you prefer
  • 1 cup of ice

Put all the stuff in your blender and blend for about a minute or so. If you dont have a vita mix you might want to quarter the apples, and half the bananas to make it a bit easier on your blender. Makes about 3-4 servings.

Carrot Citrus Coldbuster Smoothie

orange-carrotlately on Facebook it seems everyone has some sort of a cold going on. What better way to fight a cold than a vitamin packed smoothie in the morning! We all know vitamin C is the best thing to fight back a cold and Oranges are packed with this little vitamin. Carrots are also packed with nutritional and medicinal properties, loaded with vitamins and antioxidants, with vitamin A toping them all off (over 400% RDA). Lastly we have the pineapple another fruit packed with vitamin C and manganese. It also is a source of bromeliad, an enzyme which may reduce inflammation and swelling.

  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup of baby carrots
  • 1 orange, peeled
  • 1/2 cup of frozen pineapple
  • 2 cups of cold water (start off with one cup and add more as needed)
  • 1-1/2 cups of ice

Mix all up in your favorite blender and serve :) Want an extra boost? substitute GoodBelly Mango Probiotic juice for the water!
