May want to be careful if you are having this one for breakfast (just kidding) but this one does make a great night cap before bed to help you sleep. For starters cherries have high levels of melatonin, specifically the Montmorency variety. Melatonin is produced in our bodies when its dark, and one of its functions is to help regulate the sleep-wake cycle by chemically causing drowsiness and lowering the body temperature. Next the soy milk contains high levels of tryptophan which has a sleep inducing effect as well. Finally my favorite the banana, being high in magnesium which has a calming effect on the body.
- 3/4 Cup Soy Milk
- 1 Banana
- 1-1/2 Cup of Frozen Cherries
- 1/2 Cup of Ice
Simple! I use vanilla soy milk for smother flavor and if you want extra relaxing effect cut the frozen cherries and use 1 cup concentrated tart cherry juice. Tart cherry juice can have up to 10 times the melatonin levels. If you use the juice also increase the ice!
