Relaxin Night Cap Cherry Smoothie

Cherry-Banana Smoothie RecipeMay want to be careful if you are having this one for breakfast (just kidding) but this one does make a great night cap before bed to help you sleep. For starters cherries have high levels of melatonin, specifically the Montmorency variety. Melatonin is produced in our bodies when its dark, and one of its functions is to help  regulate the sleep-wake cycle by chemically causing drowsiness and lowering the body temperature. Next the soy milk contains high levels of tryptophan which has a sleep inducing effect as well. Finally my favorite the banana, being high in magnesium which has a calming effect on the body.

  • 3/4 Cup Soy Milk
  • 1 Banana
  • 1-1/2 Cup of Frozen Cherries
  • 1/2 Cup of Ice

Simple! I use vanilla soy milk for smother flavor and if you want extra relaxing effect cut the frozen cherries and use 1 cup concentrated tart cherry juice. Tart cherry juice can have up to 10 times the melatonin levels. If you use the juice also increase the ice!

Simple Vanilla Cherry Smoothie

Cherry SmoothiesHere’s a fruit we haven’t touched on yet on the site, the little cherry! This little fruit is also pack full of nutrients and can be a benefit in your diet. For one cherries are full of a little thing called Anthocyanins, ya I can’t pronounce it either but it is used by your body to produce essential amino acids. It also is a natural pain reliever! Cherries also have Melatonin which help regulate your sleep cycles. Besides these goodies they are also full of Vitamin C and a good source of fiber.

Best way to get cherries is to find them  frozen and already pitted. Haven’t checked costco yet but I think I did see a large bag there, I’ll get back to you on that. Ok on the the recipe, just a simple one today but quite tasty. Who dosen’t like vanilla cherry?

  • 1-1/2 cups of frozen pitted cherries
  • 3/4 cup of non-fat vanilla greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup vanilla soy milk (vanilla rice milk for those avoiding soy)
plop everything into your blender and blend away. Best as always starting at a low speed and build up. Makes about 2 servings.
