Leafy Green Smoothie for Reduced Anxiety

Omega-3sThose that know me know I have bouts of general anxiety disorder (sometimes not so general) So i my reading on finding ways to reduce or eliminate my anxiety I have found that Omega 3s are quite helpful. In studies those that have increased their Omega 3s had shown a reduction in anxiety and depression. Most people get their Omega 3s from fish and fish oil tablets. A better way is in a smoothie!

No not blending your fish, but rather with dark leafy greens!  Leafy greens are a great source of Omega 3s, not as much as that fish but still a good source. Spinach and Kale along with Broccoli tops the list of good sources. Flaxseed is also rich in Omega 3s so that is why I try adding it to every smoothie I can!

Here is a great green smoothie to help with your anxiety and depression.

  • 2 cups fresh baby spinach
  • 4 stalks fresh kale
  • 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1/2 large orange
  • 1/2 cup rice milk
  • 2  bananas
  • 2 tablespoon ground flax seed

Blend in the veggies with the milk first, then add each of the fruits and finally the flaxseed. Blend until creamy and smooth! Serves about 3.

GoodBelly Probiotic Smoothie

Goodbelly Probiotic JuicesThis morning I tried something a new to mix things up. Goodbelly is the maker of several lines of Probiotic products. Probiotics are the good bacteria that are used in your intestines to help in digestion. It has been suggested that adding good bacteria can help in a healthy lifestyle and improve your health. While use of antibiotics and poor diet can diminish these good bugs, adding the good ones now and then can help balance things out again.

Goodbelly offers these little bugs in several forms, shots, powder or a nice juice beverage. I usually take the shots several times a week but this time I picked up a container of one of their juices. These are made with all natural organic juices while also being dairy and soy free. So I thought what a great way to get my probiotics and make a healthy smoothie as well.

  • 1 Cup or Watermelon and Cranberry Goodbelly Juice (you can use one of the others if you wish, its ok)
  • 1 Cup Frozen Strawberries
  • 1 Cup Frozen Peaches
  • 1 Banana
  • 1 Apple (cored of corse)

Makes about 4 cups

Now the Goodbelly juice is not the cheapest (quart cost me about $3.50  i think at sprouts) so may not be a regular thing for you, but should be a good addition if you can do it a couple times a week. Their site does offer coupons every so often and some to get started so check them out.

Kale Green Smoothie

Kale GreensKale is very high in beta carotene, potassium, vitamin C and fairly high in calcium. So it makes a great addition to a breakfast smoothie to start your day with a healthy meal. As with most green smoothies, be sure the fruit out wieghs the veggies and it will taste great!

  • 1-1/2 cup of rice milk (of course you can use almond or soy)
  • 3 Pitted dates
  • 1 Cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 Lg banana
  • 1 Cup chopped Kale
  • 1 Cup baby spinach
Blend it all together in your favorite blender and should make 2-3 servings. Lots of protein, low fat and no cholesterol!

Yes you can add a little energy boost to your morning smoothie by using green tea. The best way is to of course brew your own tea, as when you buy it in the market it tends to have a lot of additives and sugars. So the night before brew up some of your favorite green tea and put in the fridge till morning. While your add it maybe slice up the fruit and put it in the freezer as well, then should only take you a couple mins to put this together in the morning.

1 Banana
1/2 A honeydew melon cubed (preferably frozen)
1/4 Almond or Rice milk
1 tsp Honey
3/4 cup of green tea, chilled

Thats it! put it all into your blender and blend till smooth. Now besides all of teas great health benefits, it does add caffeine (unless you brew a de-caffenated tea) to the mix here. Some people (like me) try to avoid caffeine so please be aware of this.

Pomegranate-Blueberry Smoothie

Yummy Pomegranate Smoothies

Another refreshing recipe using one of my favorite juices, pomegranate, and the antioxidant power of blueberries! Of course a banana for creaminess, and a bit of yogurt for added protein. This makes a very tasty way to start your day or a refreshing way to cool off in the afternoon.

  • 1 12 oz. pkg of frozen unsweetend bluberries
  • 1 large banana sliced
  • 1 cup Pom pure pomegranate juice
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • 1 cup greek yogurt, plain.

Place it all in the blender and blend away! Remember liquids and soft items first, frozen items last (smaller of these first)! You may need to add a bit of water to get things moving if it is to thick for you. Makes 3-4 servings

Well it was a hot one last week and even though it seems the weather is changing it is still a little warm out. This tropical tasting smoothie will be sure to cool you down anytime of the day, but also makes a great way to start the day as well.

1 Peeled Orange
1/2 cup coconut milk
1/2 cup plain or vanilla non fat greek yogurt (optional)
1 banana
1 cup chopped frozen pineapple chunks
1/4 cup shredded coconut
Water as needed

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend at the highest setting for 30-60 seconds. Pour and enjoy!

Acai Antioxidant Blast

acaijuiceAcai berries are found and grown in South America and have been dubbed the new super food. The best benefit of this berry is its high antioxidant value, apparently  more than any other berry or fruit. While I havent actually seen the berry in any stores you can buy the juice. Sambazon makes a nice one that I found at Costco recently. It does contain a bit of Agave in it though. I mention that because there are arguments as to how healthy it is. I figure right now its such a small amount (and the only source of it I would get) that its ok, personally I dont recommend it as a sweeter. Sambazon also makes a frozen smoothie pack of just Acai berry puree.

Well anyway with blueberries (another rich antioxidant berry) this smoothie may even make you age backwards (disclaimer: there is no medical evidence of this, but it does taste good!)

1 cup of acai berry juice
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 cup frozen blueberries
1 banana (for creamy texture)
1 cup of water (add as needed)

Blend for 30-60 seconds, add in flaxseed or protein powder if you wish and makes about 2 large glasses!
